Marine Analysis provides ocean currents to mariners for optimal routing and safety. Our products have been used for the Newport-Bermuda, Marion-Bermuda, and Volvo Ocean Races. We are partnering with Commanders’ Weather to provide atmospheric and oceanic information for a swift and safe journey to Bermuda for the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race.
Feature Model Analysis
Marine Analysis uses a feature model analysis algorithm to interpret the AVHRR and altimeter data. This algorithm was developed to estimate the position and strength of currents in the Gulf Stream region. The algorithm uses models of features to interpolate the available data based upon the well known structures of rings and the Gulf Stream.
The algorithm also generates ocean current GRIB files. These can be used with routing software packages to optimize the route with the effect of the Gulf Stream and rings properly included.
What is in an Analysis?
Each analysis includes the following components:
- the analysis chart (see example above),
- an analysis chart with sea surface temperature imagery (see example below), and a
- discussion. The discussion identifies how currents have changed, what changes are expected, and how confident we are in the positions and strengths of the currents.
GRIB Files
GRIB files are available for those using routing software. The GRIB file contains currents on a 0.1 degree grid. This can be achieved through the feature model analysis that interpolates between the available data. Test your software with our GRIB files. Email us to request a test file.
